MTSS: Multi-Tiered System of Supports

What is MTSS?

MTSS is a proactive framework Cary District 26 uses to provide targeted support to students who may be struggling with academics or social-emotional growth.

The Three Tiers of Support

At D26, we visualize our support as a pyramid. Most students thrive in Tier 1, while some require the added layers of Tier 2 or Tier 3.

MTSS Diamond Frame Work

    • What it is: High-quality classroom instruction that every student receives.

    • Social-Emotional Learning: All students participate in the "Second Step" curriculum to build empathy and problem-solving skills.

    • Behavior: Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are used school-wide to create a safe, predictable environment.

    • What it is: Extra help for students who need more than Tier 1. This is delivered in small groups.

    • WIN Time: "What I Need" time is a dedicated block (30 mins for K-5; one class period for 6-8) where students get specific help with reading, math, or social skills.

    • Goal: To provide a quick "boost" to help students return to Tier 1 success.

    • What it is: High-intensity, individualized support for students who have not responded to Tier 2 interventions.

    • Focus: Specialized counseling, individual behavior plans (BIPs), or intensive academic coaching.

Our Assessment Process

District 26 uses regular screenings to identify each student’s strengths and areas for growth. These tools help us tailor our instruction to meet every child’s needs:

  • Academic Performance: We use i-Ready Diagnostics to track progress in Reading and Math.

  • Language Proficiency: The LAS Links assessment measures Spanish proficiency for students in our Dual Language program.

  • Social-Emotional Growth: We utilize DESSA (teacher-rated) and SECA (student self-reports) to understand and support student well-being.

How Decisions Are Made

If a student is struggling, our Problem-Solving Teams (made up of teachers, specialists, and administrators) meet to review:

  1. Current Performance: How is the student doing compared to peers?

  2. Intervention Success: Is the current level of support working?

  3. Next Steps: Do we need to change the intensity or type of support?

Parent Collaboration: You are a vital part of this team. If your child begins receiving Tier 2 or Tier 3 supports, your school will notify you and keep you updated on their progress.
